Here is the Letters page from World's Finest Comics #282 from 1982. Previously the book had been 60 pages and selling for a dollar each with about 3 or 4 back up stories. With this issue it was now back to regular size and now had only 1 back up story. The back up for this issue was Green Arrow and the Atom even was squeezed in for 2 pages. But look at the letters page logo. It is still the one they used when it had more stories. GA made the cut on the logo but not the Atom. Unless he is there in sub-atomic size.

World's Finest Comics #141 1964 DC

I have been on a World's Finest comics kick in case you haven't noticed over at my other site http://mailittoteamup.blogspot.com/ I recently came across this text page in issue 141 that shows they were trying to figure out what the title of the letters page should be. In 1964 many books already had letters pages so World's Finest was coming late to the party. A fact that they made notice of when they mention other names or letter pages in some of their other books.

For some Monkee fan out there my trouble is going to be your pleasure. I am laid off work and need at least $300 by the end of the month. So here's the deal. I will send you a framed and signed picture of all four Monkees, a signed first edition of Micky's book "I'm A Believer, my life of Monkees, Music and Madness", a DVD of the 1997 reunion of all four in England, my fictional book of the Monkees "Last Train to Murder" and a 1960's comic book of the Monkees. The signed photo I bought from an autograph dealer. At that time it was only signed by Micky, Peter and Mike and came with a certificate of authenticy. Davy signed it for me in person after a concert in Cincinnati, Ohio. The book that was signed by Micky was gotten for me by afriend and given to me as a Christmas gift years ago. It pains me to have to sell them but I need the money more. So if you donate $300 I will send you all of these if you are the first person to donate and e-mail me that you donated it and give me your address. In the early 90's Malibu comics started their Ultraverse. One of the heroes of that comic book universe was Night Man. He was one of the more successful ones and even had a successful syndicated TV show based on the book.

In 1964 Archie comics produced a comic book about the Shadow. The first issue was pretty good and it dealt with the Shadow that we all knew at that time. But as of the second issue he became a superhero with the union suit and all. It ran for 8 issues and the text page had a storyt that ran the length of the series. I wanted to do a page a day but I don't have the last one.

Well if you look to the right and on some moniters you may have to scroll down but there you will see that our poll is over. The majority wanted to see the whole letters page so that is what I will post here from now on. I personally really liked jsut showing the art as I think of this site as a comic art gallery but you have to give the people what they want sometimes.
To start the new postings off here is the Fantastic Four letters page from 1975. The Ff had a long run with their old one. I was just a blue ribbon with their trademark 4 in the middle and read "Fantastic Four Fan Page." It wasn't very appealing to me. This one is a vast iimprovement.

By the time 1967 rolled around Lana Lang was an important character in many of the Superman titles. Espically in Lois Lane's book. She was so important that for a time they used the above letterhead on the letters page. I have always wondered why Lana Lang never got her own series.

In the early 70's when DC comics started publishing the original Captain Marvel again. Some readers were debating on if he was better then Superman. Of course this was an old debate as it was going on when Fawcett was publishing the Captain's adventures. This letterhead is from a 1974 issue of Superman.

Here is the 1964 letterhead for the letters page of Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos. Notice that on this one, taken from issue #13, they write that Marvel comics tried to reply with a postcard to all who wrote in to them. But they couldn't keep up so they had to stop. Marvel seemed to be very considerate of their readers during the Silver Age. No wonder they grew so fast to become DC's main competation. Other companies should keep that in mind today.

In the 1950's the comic book companies cutback on their pages. They use to be 52 pages in length. From time to time one of the companies have tried to get back to include more pages. Usually they would have one original story and the rest were filled with pin ups and reprint stories. This is from Marvel comics 1974 attempt from the book Giant Size Super-stars. It featured the Fantastic Four and the Hulk in the first issue.

I loved to read Archie Comics Madhouse Comics in the 1960's. I stopped reading it not around 1971 and thought it had been canceled that same year. To my surprise I ran across a copy of one recently that was dated 1978. I couldn't believe that it was still being published at that late date. However, it was cut back to four times a year.The letters page was now being answered by Aunt Gabby. A letter in this issue was by a girl asking how to get her boyfriend to stop smoking. Pretty heavy stuff back then for a humor book.

Logan's Run 1976

In the mid 70's the movie Logan's Run with Michael York as Logan was a big hit. It also introduced moviegoers to a young Farrah Fawcett in a minor role. The story had Logan as a fururistic policeman in a youth run society. When people hit 30 they were suppose to go to the next plane of existance but still be alive. Some were scared of this and ran from the law. Logan's main job was to go after the runners. Then Logan finds out that they are actually killing the people once they hit 30. He finds this out just as he hits 30 years old when they add 4 years to his record when they suspect he is a spy after he makes a friend with a runners religous member. So they add the years in an attempt to make sure that he doesn't get a chance to tell anyone. Now Logan is the one who must run.

Here is the only Letter page letterhead from the only letter page the series ever had. The book only officially lasted 4 issues. Copies of the unpublished 5th issue have filtered out by the publiciation Cancelled Comic Cavalcade. The editor on the letters page said that the letters of approval were pouring in. If so it was still too late to save the book. Maybe that is why they didn't put much thought into any art for the letterhead.

When romance comic books were published the letters page was treated as an advice column for young girls. Much like Ann Landers and Dear Abby were for the newspapers. For DC Comics' Young Romance the advice columnist was Laura Penn.

In honor of what would have been my Dad's birthday here is a letterhead from Classics Illustrated. It was a favorite of my Dad's. Also this goes to show that a letterhead doesn't have to appear at the top. Classics Illustrated would put short stories or biographies of the author at the back of the book instead of a letters page. Art like that above would usually appear at the bottom of the page. I wonder if they were still called letterheads? Perhaps it was called a footer since it was at the foot of the page.

Green Goblin 1996

Yes the Green Goblin had his own series for short time. But it wasn't Harry or Norman Osborn wearing the suit. It was Phil Urich. He found the Goblin's old lair and used his secrets to fight crime instead of commiting crimes. It was interesting but didnt last long. The 14th issue was its last. The above hearder is from the 4th issue.

From when Marvel used the name Ghost Rider for a western hero they created. With the Johnny Blaze motorcycle riding Ghost Rider becoming more popular in the 70's they changed this one's name to Night Rider. Later they incorproated him into the history of the Ghost Rider and he even made it into the movie version.
